x 2108 The presentation seeks to set out and analyse those forces which are impacting upon higher education in an increasingly globalised world, including HE’s role as a driver in national and international knowledge economies, and how market forces and competition impact on institutions. Consideration is also given to the macro challenge of HE funding – striking the correct balance between use of public and private resources, so that quality can be maintained and improved and participation increased, in a financially sustainable way.
Sir Howard Newby, KB, CBE, BA, PhD, AcSS, is Vice-Chancellor of the University of Liverpool. Prior to this he was Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol, the Chief Executive of the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), Vice-Chancellor of the University of Southampton, Chairman and Chief Executive of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), President of Universities UK, and President of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.
He was made a CBE in 1995 for services to social science and a knighthood in 2000 for services to higher education. Sir Howard was formerly a Professor of Sociology in both the UK and USA and has published a large number of books and articles on social change in rural England.
